Puzzle pieces with one blue piece featuring a pink heart, symbolizing autism acceptance in Colorado.

There’s no universally confirmed record for the oldest living person with autism, but one well-known case stands out: Donald Gray Triplett, often called “Case 1” because he was the first person formally diagnosed with autism by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943.

Donald Triplett lived to be 89 years old, passing away in 2023.  While his lifelong story gives hope about aging with autism, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the “oldest ever”—just the oldest we know with a documented, formal diagnosis. Many people with autism, especially older generations, were never officially diagnosed, making it tough to compare.

What we do know is that with good support, healthcare, and community, many people with autism can live full, long lives. Research shows life expectancy for autistic individuals can be affected by co-occurring medical conditions, access to care, and social support.
